Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to test the difference of pain perception between patients and nurses by FIPS.
The subjects were 76 orthopedic patients whose age ranged from 593 year old(Mean=45) who were experiencing pain from orthopedic.conditions at 1 province hospital and 1 university hospital in Seoul.
The data were collected from Sept. 1994 to Nov. 1994.
McGrath¢¥s(1985) Face Interval Pain Scale were used as measures.
First, the nurse choise approprivate pain level card through assessing patient¢¥s face when her patient experinecing pain. And then she ask the patient how much pain does he have experienced.
To analyzed the subject¢¥s general characteristics statistical frequency were employed.
To determine the difference pain intensity between nurses and patients mean was employed.
To determing the relations of pain perceptions between nurses and patients Pearson coefficient was employed.
The findings were as follows
1. There were 43(56.60/o) male and 33(43.4%) female.
They are 37(48.7%) fracture patients, 10(13.2%) ostoearthritis, 7(9.2%) herniated disc 5(6.6%) amputation patients and 17(22.4%) the other trauma patients.
2. The mean of pain intensity is 2. 77 by noses and3.02 by patients.
3. The pain perception of nurses and patients were highly correlated (r =0. 72, p=0.001).
The conclusion :
Pain Perception of nurses is highly correlated with patient¢¥s even though the mean of pain intensity is different.
The nurse have to assess based on the perception of patient, because patient¢¥s subjective perception is more reliable than nurse¢¥s.
